How to Optimize Your Home Network for Maximum Performance
January 5, 2026
Even the fastest internet connection can be hampered by poor home network setup. Here's how to get the most out of your service.
Router Placement Matters
Your router's location can dramatically affect your Wi-Fi performance:
- Central location: Place it in the middle of your home, not in a corner
- Elevated position: Higher placement provides better coverage
- Avoid obstructions: Keep it away from walls, metal objects, and electronics
- Open spaces: Avoid closets and cabinets that can block signals
Use the Right Frequency
2.4 GHz: Better range, slower speeds. Good for IoT devices and far-away rooms.
5 GHz: Faster speeds, shorter range. Best for streaming and gaming.
Update Your Equipment
If your router is more than 3-4 years old, it might be time for an upgrade. Newer Wi-Fi 6 and 6E routers offer significantly better performance, especially with multiple devices.
