Speed tests are useful tools, but they're often misunderstood. Here's how to get accurate results and what those numbers actually mean.
Before You Test
For accurate results:
- Close other applications: Streaming, downloads, and cloud syncs affect results
- Use a wired connection: Wi-Fi introduces variables that make testing less accurate
- Test at different times: One test doesn't tell the whole story
- Use multiple test services: Different servers can give different results
Understanding the Numbers
Download Speed: How fast data comes TO your device. Important for streaming, browsing, and downloading files.
Upload Speed: How fast data goes FROM your device. Critical for video calls, cloud backups, and live streaming.
Ping (Latency): How quickly your connection responds. Lower is better, especially for gaming and video calls.
Jitter: Variation in latency. High jitter causes choppy video calls and laggy gaming.
What's "Good" Speed?
It depends on your usage:
- Basic browsing and email: 10-25 Mbps
- HD streaming and video calls: 25-100 Mbps
- 4K streaming and work from home: 100-300 Mbps
- Gaming and large household: 300+ Mbps
When Results Don't Match
If your speed test shows much less than your plan:
- Test with an Ethernet cable to rule out Wi-Fi issues
- Restart your router
- Check for background downloads or updates
- Contact your provider if issues persist
